Talking Music
Also this summer I’ve been invited to give some lectures, workshops and performances at the Summer University of the Performing Arts Forum in France.
Its open to everyone. Just drop me a line if you are interested to come.
TALKING MUSIC
With a focus on navigating collectively through music and sound, PAF MUSIC WEEK proposes practices of listening, reflecting, discussing and doing music.
Lendl Barcelos lectures on the ontology of sound, sonic identity and radical listening, Ned McGowan talks about time perception and rhythm, Agnès Gayraud in dialogue with Adorno about inauthenticity as the basis of pop aesthetics, Andrew Dymond aka ex-Duracell about the secrets of traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe, as well as Christian Töpfner work-shopping Max MSP, Perrine en morceaux making us sing with mouth closed before breakfast, Mike Schmid logging into synchronicity and you sharing what you find worthwhile sharing …
Workshops and collective experiments of all kinds, including practical elaborations of the lectures will be scheduled for those interested. There will be enough time to practice your instrument, rehearse with your band or in new constellations, initiate projects, share your knowledge, learn Supercollider, listen to music together, watch music documentaries or anything you feel like.

Composing Rhythm
American Highways Radio Show (Guy Livingston)
Photo: Bas Bouma
I was on Guy Livingston's 'American Highways', where he interviewed me about rhythm, machines, India and other influences.
"The subtlety of his compositions contrast with their wildness. In this episode of American Highways, pianist Guy Livingston brings us a composer with a fascination for machines and industrial sounds. Plus, Ned McGowan has worked extensively with the Carnatic music of India, and we hear works influenced by his travels and collaborations on the subcontinent. No Permission Without Trespassing
The last newsletter I wrote about the premiere of a new piece for the the Dutch reed quintet Calefax, called No Permission Without Trespassing. NPWT is a rule based piece where the players fill in the notes based on instructions in the score. Here’s a video where Calefax nails it in performance, taking the situations to new levels.
