"It's striking how free and rich the music is and how well the contrabass (flute) lends itself for this"

"The very witty 'six pièces mécaniques' from the American-Dutch composer Ned McGowan. This composition, written in 2012 for On The Spot, has to be seen in person, as it exists of a row of theatrical musical games. With it, McGowan introduces his own way of improvisation. In the score are barely any notes, but all the more rules - and new instructions for positions on the podium for every section. A range of imitation, bullying, and power games come by, where the audience discovers each rule hidden in the music in the course of each part. This fits Calefax and Vloeimans like a glove."
