Teaching & workshops
Ned McGowan is a professor at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, where he teaches composition, Advanced Rhythm and Pulse, and ensembles at the Utrecht Conservatory. Further coaches McGowan artistic research at Codarts in Rotterdam.McGowan has given masterclasses in extended flute techniques, creativity, improvisation and repertoire from Mozart to Berio to McGowan at the Utrecht Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, the Aspen Music Festival, University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, University of Michigan, California Arts Institute, the Neflac Flute Summer Academy, led by Emily Beynon (principal flutist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), Denison University, University of Dayton, Cincinnati College Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland State University, Brigham Young University, Bilgi University, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, Mysore University, Iowa State University, San Francisco State University and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
His classes in Advanced Rhythm and Pulse have been featured at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Utrecht Conservatory and he currently leads the International Rhythm Course at the Utrecht Summer School. Rhythm workshops to all musicians have been regularly featured during his University and Conservatorium visits, as well as lectures on his own works and PhD research for composition forums.
